Justice Department to sue California over 'sanctuary' laws

Justice Department to sue California over 'sanctuary' laws

This lawsuit is a misguided waste of federal resources - much like the Administration's indiscriminate approach to immigration enforcement that has entangled hard-working residents, including the recent deportation of a Bay Area nurse and mother of three. The President enacts some new policy in keeping with his agenda and someone immediately sues the White House, finding a judge willing to issue an injunction to halt the enactment of the policy while the case grinds its way through the courts.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke to local and state law-enforcement officials in downtown Sacramento this morning, where he criticized California immigration laws that obstruct enforcement of federal rules - and announced a lawsuit against the state.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said he was doing it all to help public safety. "At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America", he wrote.

It's a legal fight that's sure to play itself out over the coming years.

Californians, however, aren't perturbed by the suit.

The California laws were passed in response to Trump's promises to sharply ramp up the deportation of people living in the US illegally. So it is odd that a Republican administration would make a legal claim that's entirely at odds with a doctrine bred and nurtured by conservatives concerned about state's rights.

In Fiscal Year 2017, ICE booked 323,591 aliens in custody, 41,880 of whom were detained in California, according to the lawsuit. And they weren't just on immigration. Toward the end of President Barack Obama's tenure, his administration sued North Carolina over what came to be known as the "bathroom bill", which barred transgender people from using restrooms that did not correspond with the sex on their birth certificates.

But there are more urgent and immediate differences as well. "We are protecting our communities from immigration agents intimidating people and overreaching in very serious ways". And I think we're going to win.

The acting director of the Justice Department Thomas Homan said on "Fox & Friends" last week that they are considering charging Schaaf with obstruction of justice. They were drowned out sometimes by protesters with louder speakers angling for a more aggressive confrontation with Sessions. The lawsuit targets three California laws that specifically interfere with the federal responsibility to deal with immigration.

DOJ lawyers consider the laws to be an attempt to regulate federal immigration.

During a fiery response to Sessions' speech, Brown claimed Sessions of lying and trying to appease Trump. California has the opportunity to flip Congress to a Democratic majority, and California is at the center of the administration's backwards immigration policy.

Afterward, she said of Sessions: "How dare you" vilify members of the community, distract people from a broken immigration system that breaks up families and distort the reality of declining violent crime in a "sanctuary city" like Oakland.

A lot of this might be natural differences of opinion between a President who was put in office by a coalition of states that did not touch the West Coast.

He also called the Trump administration "full of liars". It was carried by state Senate leader Kevin de León, a candidate for U.S. Senate, who has led the anti-Trump resistance in the Legislature. "A series of actions and events has occurred here that directly and adversely impact the work of our federal officers", Sessions said.
