Another strong quake shakes remote Papua New Guinea region

Another strong quake shakes remote Papua New Guinea region

The latest natural disaster, recorded just after midnight early on Wednesday (1400 GMT Tuesday), hit at a depth of 33 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

"Santos is deeply saddened by the loss of life and personal injury suffered by communities in Papua New Guinea as a result of the recent quake", Santos Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Gallagher said in a company statement.

It struck overnight close to the epicenter of last week's magnitude-7.5 quake in the border region of Hela and Southern Highland provinces, 600 kilometers from the capital Port Moresby.

Mr Powi said 39 people had died in his province after families were crushed by their collapsing homes or buried by landslides during last week's natural disaster.

"Mothers and children are so traumatised".

Another strong quake shakes remote Papua New Guinea region

A spokeswoman at Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Centre said on Wednesday that authorities had not yet finalised a casualty report. The United Church has establishing church-led response centres in Tari, Hela Province and Mendi, Southern Highlands, to coordinate initial needs assessments and share church actions and to plan for the coordinated response and recovery efforts. "So they have demanded for an independent inquiry", he said.

Drinking water supplies are also still under threat in many areas, as the quake damaged water infrastructure and mudslides contaminated other sources. Provincial health officials and Red Cross volunteers were urgently trying to improve sanitation systems and carry out hygeine training to avoid an outbreak of dystentry, Regmi said. "People of the highlands are not used to the impact of natural disasters, and this Magnitude 7.5 quake has taken everyone by surprise".

Officials estimated 150,000 people were in need of aid following the large quake, and residents continue to flee their homes every time the ground shakes, fearing structural collapse.

"The logistics are still a massive problem", CARE Australia aid worker Anna Bryan told Reuters.

'Right now the main challenge in the affected areas is accessibility by roads. So that's making it quite hard to get water, food and medicine to the remote areas, ' said Milton Kwaipo, Caritas Australia's disaster response and management officer in Papua New Guinea. Project stakeholder Santos released a statement on Monday saying it would take "approximately eight weeks" to complete repairs and restore production.
