Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to pay NFL $2 million for legal fees

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to pay NFL $2 million for legal fees

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has won the latest tug-of-war with Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys. The settlement came after a separate hearing this week with regards to Jones' obligation to reimburse the league for the legal expenses, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media and Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Jerry Jones may not be headed for a massive legal war with the National Football League, after all.

Jones met with Goodell and the NFL's finance committee Monday to argue that he shouldn't pay because he wasn't an official party to Elliott's lawsuit and that he hadn't unduly interfered with league business as league owners negotiated Goodell's new contract last fall.

Jones publicly fought to block the commissioner's contract before Goodell ultimately signed a lucrative extension in December. Jones' opposition to Goodell is based in part on the league's decision to suspend Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott for six games after investigating domestic violence allegations raised against Elliott by a former girlfriend.

Jones and the Cowboys stated that they were merely "observers" throughout despite Jones' outspokenness.

A provision was added to the league's constitution more than two decades ago that allows the commissioner to demand the reimbursement of legal fees from owners who cause legal problems for the league.

In the midst of Elliott's appeal, Jones threatened to sue the league over Goodell's proposed deal but didn't follow through.

He never followed through with the suit but it resulted in the exchange of several letters between Jones' attorney and those representing the owners of the compensation committee.
