National Basketball Association warns Chicago Bulls about resting healthy players

National Basketball Association warns Chicago Bulls about resting healthy players

It is engaging in a race to the bottom with other teams trying to position themselves for the NBA Draft lottery.

The Chicago Bulls still are free to lose games as they please. Lopez has sat out the Bulls' last five games while Holiday has missed four of five, with the team going 1-4 in that span, including a blowout defeat to the Kyrie Irving-less Boston Celtics on Monday. However, despite all of the losing lately, they have just the eighth-worst record overall.

One of those teams, the Mavericks, is openly engaged in tanking. But then again, what the Bulls would get a warning for is entirely their fault.

For players like the Chicago Bulls' Robin Lopez - a reasonably good player in a bad team - tanking could be seen as a disservice to him and a waste of his time as a player in the world's premier league.

The dialogue between league officials and the Bulls was cooperative and productive, with the league providing advice and the Bulls open to guidance on the nuances of the new rest rules, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

"After the All-Star break, we had communication with the league office about Robin and Justin's roles", Paxson said. Lopez was averaging 25.5 minutes per game for the Bulls before the All-Star break, but has not taken the court for the team since. There are five teams tied with 20 wins right behind them, and Chicago would clearly increase their chances of getting a better draft pick in the National Basketball Association lottery if they are able to lose a few games. The Bulls, 21-42, now sits at the 12th spot in the East.
