Two students shot in apparent gun accident at Alabama high school

After a 17-year-old girl was killed and a 17-year-old boy was critically injured in a school shooting on Wednesday, parents and students at Huffman High School echoed similar sentiments of shock and disbelief that something like this could happen in their community.

The female student, 17, who attended Huffman High School in Birmingham, was taken to the UAB Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the Birmingham Police Department said in a statement.

Birmingham Police officials say a person of interest is in custody following a fatal shooting at an Alabama high school. "It's not where someone from outside came into the school, " al.com quoted the police as saying. He also said it was possible the shooting was accidental and confirmed it wasn't carried out by someone who entered the school from off campus.

This story is breaking.

Police said at least two shots were fired but are still trying to sort out a timeline of events and what led to the gunfire. About an hour earlier, a woman at the police station who said she was the boy's mother, said she had not been told his condition, but she did not believe he had a gun.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the school. "I was just hoping my baby was OK, that everybody was OK", the mother told the newspaper.

She said she knows the boy involved, a senior, and said he's not the type of person to hurt anybody.

Tension in U.S. schools is high, after a gunman with an assault-style rifle killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida, on February 14. "Someone's niece, someone's best friend, someone's granddaughter we lost", Woodfin somberly said at the press conference.

The police chief says that "at this particular time, we are considering this accidental". Every year more students and teachers, sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters are killed in school shootings - we need to do everything in our power to make this incident the last.
