Indians abducted by ISIS confirmed dead, informs Sushma Swaraj

But now, Swaraj has declared them dead.

39 Indians kidnapped, killed by ISIS in Iraq, Reported by two Bangladeshi workers: Well, now shocking news is coming out from the mouth of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj as she told that "Thirty-nine Indians kidnapped by the Islamic State in Iraq's Mosul in 2014 are dead".

Forty workers, mostly from poor families in northern India, were working for a construction company in Iraq when they were taken hostage in 2014 by IS after it captured Mosul.

They waited four long years.

The Indians went missing a night after Mosul was taken over on 10 June 2014. Among the 39 Indians who were missing, most were from different places in Punjab like Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Jalandhar, while a few belonged to Himachal Pradesh and Bihar.

Harjit Masih, who said he was the 40th Indian kidnapped, had claimed in 2015 that the others were all killed while he was in Iraq.

She said, "Until Sushma Swaraj does not tell me anything about the case I would not believe". He claimed he was hit in the leg, and pretended to be dead, which is how he later escaped. He added that he was brought back to India within weeks of the shootout, but was "released" by the government months later.

Swaraj had categorically denied any truth in Masih's statement.

'What proof were they talking about then?'

"Later, through another unreliable resource the government said they were held hostage in a mosque".

"We knocked every door thinking some of them may have escaped". Swaraj told India's parliament it has now been confirmed that the 39 men are dead.

"If the government didn't have any details, why did they keep telling everyone they are alive?" They had been saying that all of them are alright and now they say this.

She said that till Mosul was freed in July previous year from the IS, the government was trying to ascertain if these 39 people were alive. "I don't even know what to say".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Swaraj and her colleague in the foreign ministry, General (Retired) VK Singh, had "left no stone unturned" to locate and bring home the missing workers. The identity of one person is still being verified, she said. "What was the point of assuring us all these years?" she asked. "Since 2014 I had been pleading with the government to bring him back somehow and today they say that he is no more", Tiwari, who lives in Bihar's Siwan district said.

As they struggled to come to terms with the bitter truth, some of the family members wondered why the "Centre kept them in the dark" all this while. "What will his wife do?" he said before bursting into tears. Manjinder Singh wanted to go to Dubai, said Kaur. "I say with a heavy heart they have been killed".
