United States says conducts air strike in Somalia, killing 5 militants

Somalia's al-Shabab Islamic extremists on Sunday launched an attack on a base for African Union troops in the country's south, killing four Ugandan peacekeepers, said Ugandan army spokesman Brig. Four Ugandan soldiers were killed, the army said.

The Somali-based group of Al Shabaab has denied that any fighter of the group had been killed or injured in the raids.

The group was pushed out of Mogadishu in 2011 by Somali troops backed by AMISOM soldiers.

"This includes partnering with AMISOM and Somali National Security Forces in combined counter-terrorism operations and targeting terrorists, their training camps, and their safe havens throughout Somalia and the region", it added.

The attack began with a two-car bombing followed by an nearly four-hour battle between peacekeepers and al-Shabaab, according to Sgt. Omar Abdi of the Somali National Army, who spoke to Anadolu Agency by phone.
