Ant McPartlin pleads guilty to drink driving after auto crash

Ant McPartlin pleads guilty to drink driving after auto crash

TV presenter Ant McPartlin has said he was "ashamed and mortified" after crashing his vehicle while drink-driving with his mother in the passenger seat.

The television presenter released a statement late Monday afternoon expressing his regret at what had happened.

Ant and Lisa split in January 2018 after a tough 12 months in which Ant admitted himself to rehab for an addiction to painkillers, and reliance on alcohol.

The court appearance saw Ant being given an £86,000 fine as well as being handed a 20-month driving ban over the Richmond crash.

McPartlin's barrister Liam Walker described the crash as a "brief relapse" and claimed his mother was not aware he was over the drink-drive limit.

He told onlookers that he was "truly sorry for what happened", saying: "I let myself down".

At this point, Freeman was interrupted by the crash but - clearly a professional - she carried on, adding: "Excuse me, sorry, it's just some cars have had a bit of a crash behind us there".

He spoke to confirm his name, date of birth, address and nationality before pleading guilty to a single charge of drink-driving. I've let myself down, I let a lot of people down.

"I'd like to apologise to everybody involved and I'm just thankful no one was seriously hurt".

Outside Wimbledon Magistrates' Court there are about 40 photographers and news crews, split into two groups as they try to work out which entrance Ant McPartlin will come in through.

Speaking outside Wimbledon Magistrates' Court he said: "I'm truly sorry for what happened".

Upon sentencing, District Judge Barbara Barnes told McPartlin "you are a well-known and successful entertainer".

After he was charged, ITV announced the Saturday Night Takeaway host would step back from his TV commitments, with co-presenter Declan Donnelly hosting the final two episodes of the show on his own.

He is now presenting Britain's Got Talent, although McPartlin made an appearance on the ITV show over the weekend as the show aired its pre-recorded auditions.
