Saudis Warn of 'Painful' Response Over Yemen Drones

Saudis Warn of 'Painful' Response Over Yemen Drones

Yemen's dominant Houthi movement said its air defense forces shot down a US -made fighter drone on Wednesday in the Yemeni Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

"Our concern is that any of these developments may in a stroke, take peace off the table", he said on Tuesday.

Col Turki Al Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition forces, on Monday warned of a "painful" response if the Houthis continued to launch attacks on Saudi Arabia using Iran-supplied drones. "I am convinced that there is a real danger of this", Griffiths said in reference to the ballistic missile attacks by the Houthis.

The Saudi-backed Yemeni government last week claimed the drones were "made in Iran", adding that Yemen's military did not possess such aircraft and it was "impossible to manufacture them locally".

Mr Griffiths, a former British diplomat who replaced Mauritania's Ould Cheikh Ahmed last month, briefed the UN Security Council for the first time on Tuesday.

Russian Federation in February vetoed a British-drafted resolution strongly supported by the United States that would have put pressure on Iran over its failure to block supplies of missiles to the Huthi rebels.

Tehran has repeatedly denied arming the rebels, which would violate a United Nations weapons embargo slapped on Yemen in 2015.

New UN peace envoy to Yemen says new framework will only deliver peace if fighting is brought to an end.

Saudi Arabia is leading a mostly Arab military coalition to fight Houthi rebels in Yemen since March 2015, in a bid to restore President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was ousted by Houthis in September 2014.
