AMU protest: Internet services shut in Aligarh

AMU protest: Internet services shut in Aligarh

It had come to the administration's notice that some anti-social elements could vitiate communal harmony by spreading rumours through videos, using internet services, his order said. They are boycotting classes for the next two days.

The students also offered Friday prayers at the scene of the sit-in, while a large number of teachers and other members of the AMU fraternity participated.

The controversy surrounding Jinnah's poster was triggered this week after BJP MP from Aligarh Satish Gautam wrote to Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor, seeking explanation for Jnnah's portrait finding a place in students' union office. "Before partition, Jinnah fought for India's independence".

He said that Jinnah's portrait had been hanging in the hall since 1938 but nobody objected to it because everyone understood the logic behind the portrait's continued presence at the hall.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi accused the BJP of provoking sentiments and communalising the atmosphere by raking up an "artificial" issue of Jinnah's picture at Aligarh Muslim University, which has led to violence in the Uttar Pradesh town. Jinnah, a founder member of the University Court, had also been given this honour before Partition.

Yesterday, 28 students and 13 cops were injured in a clash which broke out between AMU students and the police. The Vice Chancellor also visited the area where students were protesting and assured them of his "solidarity".

A spokesperson of KUTA in a statement issued here said there was no justification of police action against those peacefully protesting against vandalising and manhandling by Hindu Yuva Vahini leaders who "had forced their entry into the AMU and raised objectionable and intimidating slogans inside the campus".

The teachers also plan a peace march up to the district collectorate.

Meanwhile, tensions are high inside the AMU campus and elsewhere. Islam said protesters who had entered the campus were reportedly carrying firearms.
