Police face recognition misidentified 2300 as potential criminals

Police in Wales adopted facial recognition previous year in an attempt to catch more criminals, but it hasn't been particularly accurate: data on the agency's own website revealed that 92% (2,297) of those were false positives. During 2017's Champions League Final, the technology failed mightily when it misidentified thousands of potential criminals.

But out of the 2,470 potential matches, 92 percent (2,297) were found to be "false positives", according to data on the force's website. The Wales Police force added: "No facial recognition system is 100% accurate under all conditions", and defended the overall results by pointing out there have been 2,000 positive IDs in nine months with 450 arrests and no wrongful arrests.

The police force began trialing the technology in June past year and used it as some 170,000 people arrived in the Welsh capital for the football match between Real Madrid and Juventus. It also said no one had been arrested after an incorrect match. It gave a 90 percent false positive at a boxing match previous year, and 87 percent of the identifications it made at a rugby match were incorrect.

The force blamed the high number of false positives at the football final on "poor quality images" supplied by agencies, including Uefa and Interpol, as well as the fact it was its first major deployment of the technology.

Police face recognition skeptics will mainly site its unreliability as a main factor for their distrust. "However, since we introduced the facial recognition technology, no individual has been arrested where a false positive alert has led to an intervention and no members of the public have complained". Even though the there have been false positives at events since June despite claims of improving accuracy. The police also insisted that the cameras help to facilitate the identification process and to save time.

Police chief Matt Jukes told reporters that the technology is essential to keep other people safe especially when the police have to deal with massive crowds of people.

However, the civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch criticised the technology.
