Records on Central Intelligence Agency nominee will not be made public - key USA lawmaker

Records on Central Intelligence Agency nominee will not be made public - key USA lawmaker

The mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks asked permission this week from a military judge to share information about CIA Director nominee Gina Haspel with the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Wyden and several other Democrats on the Senate intelligence committee have been asking the CIA to declassify all materials related to Haspel's involvement in the interrogation program.

Trump on Monday defended his choice of Haspel after sources said she sought to withdraw her nomination because of the controversy over her role in the program. But many Democrats have withheld final judgment. The only thing you can say about her is that she was willing personally to oversee the brutality which many in the Bush administration were telling us was necessary to beat the terrorists - and that she drafted orders to destroy evidence of techniques used. "This can be a lady who has been a pacesetter wherever she has gone".

"I'm looking forward to Wednesday", Haspel said after meeting with Sen.

After meeting with Haspel on Tuesday, Oregon Sen.

A Senate Intelligence Committee report concluded that Mohammed was waterboarded 183 times during his time in US custody as CIA agents attempted to discern information from the terrorist commander about possible future attacks. Ron Wyden, a senior Democrat on the committee, said he expects the most crucial portions of Haspel's confirmation hearing will be conducted behind closed doors, which he said sets a unsafe precedent.

Sanders told reporters Monday Haspel is "100%" committed to seeing her confirmation process through.

"I am sure that she will be for Director Pompeo what Steve Kappes was for me - a trusted friend, lieutenant and guide to the sometimes opaque corridors of American espionage", Hayden said. Two administration officials said May 4 that Haspel is saying that if confirmed, she would be against resurrecting the program even though Trump has supported waterboarding and worse. She would be the first woman to lead the CIA and is the first career operations officer to be nominated to lead the agency in decades.

The Washington Post reports Haspel offered to withdraw her nomination.

The CIA has actively advocated for Haspel's confirmation, an usual step for the traditionally reserved agency, and the lobbying campaign has drawn scrutiny from at least one Democrat, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin of IL. "You have a public influence campaign being waged by the agency and just a boatload of misinformation", he said.

"What did she know about what is called the enhanced interrogation program?" she says. In a totally not surprising development, Yoo is on board with Gina Haspel becoming director the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA has argued it will make classified information available to senators but there are security reasons to keep that information from being released publicly. But others have disputed any characterization of Haspel as some kind of cheerleader of the harsh treatment of detainees and noted that the program was authorized by the president, deemed legal by administration lawyers and briefed to members of Congress.

"This is about trust, and the public is not being afforded an open and honest debate about the nominee", Heinrich said after his meeting with Haspel.

The panel's top Republican Sen. He chose to push for Haspel to remain as the nominee after initially signaling he would support whatever decision was taken, administration officials said.

"I don't have any concerns".

The Haspel resistance is all about scoring points - and it ignores the input of a long list of national-security luminaries from both parties who urged the Senate to confirm Haspel. Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona is battling cancer and not expected to vote.

'As far as I'm concerned, we have to fight fire with fire, ' Trump said previous year in defense of waterboarding.

Senior Republicans also raised questions about his behaviour.

Trump said he thought Tester would have a "big price to pay in Montana" over the accusations against Jackson.
