London Mayor Sadiq Khan plans TfL 'junk food' advert ban

London Mayor Sadiq Khan plans TfL 'junk food' advert ban

The UK capital has one of the highest child overweight and obesity rates in Europe, with nearly 40 percent of children aged 10 and 11 being affected.

"I want to reduce the influence and pressure that can be put on children and families to make unhealthy choices", Khan said in a statement announcing the proposals to ban advertisements for unhealthy food and drink on London's trains, buses and bus shelters. They also include a ban on new hot food takeaways opening within 400 metres of schools, the London Evening Standard writes.

Amsterdam, the Dutch capital, is five months into its ban on junk food advertising at the city's network of metro stations amid concerns over childhood obesity.

The London Mayor hopes a ban on adverts for food and drinks high in fat, salt or sugar would end that "ticking time bomb".

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has revealed his strategy to improve London's environment.

According to the Mayor's office London has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in Europe with 40 per cent of children aged 10 and 11 overweight or obese.

Many users of social media argued Mr. Khan had more pressing priorities, such a knife crime, and Hilary Ross, head of retail, food, and hospitality at law firm DWF said the ban would do little to tackle obesity.

And a bus company in Canberra, Australia, introduced a similar policy in 2015 as part of a crackdown on advertising. This is a game-changing moment, protecting kids from relentless junk food advertising on their daily journeys to school and around our unbelievable city.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of NY and now a World Health Organisation global ambassador, has "applauded" the proposed advertising ban. TV chef and anti-obesity activist Jamie Oliver also rallied in support of Khan, calling his initiative "incredible" and a "massive message" in favor of healthy eating on LBC radio.
