Senate Democrats move to revive net neutrality rules - the wrong way

If the Democrats are serious about long-term protections for consumers, they should look ahead towards a bipartisan solution, rather than looking backwards and trying to reverse the current FCC's Restoring Internet Freedom Order. They're encouraging site visitors to urge Congress to vote in favor of upholding regulations. There's a parallel, 60-day clock (excluding days on which the Senate does not meet) for action on the resolution in the Senate; if the Senate does not complete initial consideration of the measure during that window, the resolution is no longer eligible for special, expedited procedures in the Senate.

Some net neutrality critics argue that the market should be allowed to sort all this out-that dissatisfied consumers can simply take their business elsewhere if their ISP blocks or throttles their internet access. Under the Obama Administration order, internet service providers can't throttle online speed, access or content or demand premium fees for different levels of access. Potentially, other moderate Republicans could join Collins and back the effort.

A cadre led by Sen.

Before that vote, Democrats will search for a moderate Republican senator to supply a 51st vote on the resolution.

Supporters of the resolution are well aware of the legislative hurdles they have to clear. The voting members of the FCC are not public officials and are not voted into their positions.

But it's not a given, Greer said.

"The online universe is ready to fight for net neutrality", Sen. A University of Maryland poll from December indicated that 83 percent of those surveyed favored keeping the old rules in place.

But Republicans and Democrats haven't been able to agree on what rules should be enshrined into law.

IMGE, a GOP consulting firm in Alexandria, Virginia turned up similar results in a study conducted past year.

There is hope for net neutrality yet.

Prior to the rollback, nationwide protests were held as consumers anxious cable and phone companies would suddenly have greater control over what they see and do online. While the Democratic effort is facing stiff competition in Congress, it has already gained enough momentum to swing a vote with 50 senators backing the bill in total. Several states, including New Jersey, Washington, Oregon and California, have gone so far as to push legislation to enforce the principles of net neutrality within their borders.

Pai had said the repeal would keep the government from micro-managing the Internet. Today they filed the actual petition to force the vote. The state-specific custom ads, which will appear to viewers like a slow-loading website, are being targeted to 26 million Americans. "Today we enter this historic final stretch here in the Senate in the battle to save net neutrality".
