Spotify removes R. Kelly's music from their playlists

Thanks to a new "public hate content and hateful conduct policy", Spotify has made a decision to remove all traces of R. Kelly's music from its playlist offerings, reported Billboard.

Spotify's decision comes after the Time's Up initiative announced it was joining the #MuteRKelly campaign to boycott the artist and his music.

The new policy defines hateful conduct as "something that is especially harmful or hateful", such as violence against children and sexual violence.

R. Kelly has been accused of multiple accounts of varying degrees of sexual harassment and assault over the years, including running an "abusive sex cult". In 2017, R. Kelly faced allegations of abuse, "brainwashing", and controlling behavior while earlier this year it was alleged Kelly had boasted to a former partner about "training" girls as young as 14 for sex.

Spotify won't promote any songs by R. Kelly moving forward amid a wave of allegations against the singer.

R Kelly's removal comes under the new "Hate Content & Hateful Conduct" policy, which is created to "be consistent with our distinct roles in music and media". Spotify users will no longer be able to the legendary singer's music on any of the streaming service's editorial or algorithmic playlists.

In theory, this seems like a reasonable balance between not wanting to remove artists from the platform entirely and not wanting the apperance of tacitly endorsing reprehensible behavior.

Spotify just released its new "Hate Content and Hateful Conduct" policy.

Members of Kelly's team have now responded to the news - and they are not impressed.

Spotify told Billboard that rapper XXXTentacion - whose 2018 album ? hit #3 on the ARIA Charts - has also been removed from their playlists after going through his violent past.

XXXTentacion spent six months in jail in 2016-17 as a result of a November 2015 crime which resulted in charges of armed home invasion robbery as well as aggravated battery with a firearm.

They also noted that the platform still promotes music from acts that are felons and who have been arrested or convicted of violence against women, and songs that promote violence against women and misogyny.

An online campaign called #MuteRKelly has gathered steam in recent weeks, gaining public support from the "Time's Up" movement and Tarana Burke, the woman behind the #MeToo campaign. The fate of R. Kelly's discography is the first high-profile move of the company under this new mandate.
