Nasa will send helicopter to Mars to test otherworldly flight

Nasa will send helicopter to Mars to test otherworldly flight

Luckily, the flawless opportunity to accomplish this historic feat is right around the corner.

NASA has confirmed it is sending an autonomous helicopter to Red Planet that will travel with the Mars rover mission, now scheduled to launch in July 2020.

Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said the mission provided "a unique opportunity to advance Mars exploration for the future".

The Mars 2020 mission, scheduled for launch aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral in July 2020, is expected to reach the red planet in February 2021. Because Mars is far away from Earth, with radio signals taking at least 20 minutes to cross interplanetary space, the Mars Helicopter will fly autonomously and not via a human operated joy stick as drones on Earth are controlled. If successful, this will be the first use of the aircraft on a different planet, reports the online edition of the Chronicle.info with reference to the Correspondent.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been developing the helicopter since 2013, and eventually shrunk the fuselage to around the size of a softball to help make the drone viable.

The helicopter will be shuttled to Mars on board a rocket arriving in 2020, but once there it is created to be able to take off autonomously on a series of short flights. Its counter-rotating blades will spin at nearly 3,000 rpm, about 10 times faster than a similar craft here on Earth.

Mimi Aung, Mars Helicopter project manager at JPL, explains why it was necessary to make the Mars-bound helicopter stronger and more powerful than anything that came before it.

"The elevation record for a helicopter flying on the planet is about 40,000 feet (12,200 meters)".

The remote-controlled Mars Helicopter, created to take flight in the thin Martian atmosphere with twin counter-rotating blades, weighs about four pounds (1.8 kilograms), with a fuselage the size of a softball, NASA said.

NASA has been working out ways to make the Helicopter as light as possible. If it does not work, the Mars 2020 mission will not be impacted.

Both projects are considered "high-risk, high-reward" technology demonstrations, meaning that neither of the two missions will be impacted if the CubeSats and the "marscopter" fail.

Through this machine, the scientists hope to get some unparalleled bird's eye views of Mars.

The helicopter consists of solarcells to charge its lithium-ion batteries and also a heating mechanism to keep it warm throughout frigid evenings.

The space agency announced Friday that the solar-powered helicopter, which weighs about four pounds, would deploy from a car-sized rover to fly through the thin Martian atmosphere, according to Reuters.
