Apple slapped with class-action lawsuit over faulty MacBook Keyboards

Apple slapped with class-action lawsuit over faulty MacBook Keyboards

On May 11, a class-action lawsuit was filed in Northern California's U.S. District Court against Apple.

A little more than three years ago, Apple just announced a new MacBook with a "butterfly" keyboard that was 40 percent thinner than its predecessor, and ostensibly four times more stable than the previous "scissor" mechanism that MacBooks employed.

According to the lawsuit document, there are have been "thousands" of users who have been inconvenienced by this ongoing problem.

"[Apple should] provide adequate disclosure of the defective nature of the MacBooks", the plaintiffs wrote in the lawsuit.

Barbaro and Rao assert that Apple must have known the keyboards were "defective" by the time they reached the public, since complaints started mounting soon after the original 12-inch MacBook launched in 2015. "The latter demand includes reimbursement for the purchase of replacement laptops", AppleInsider reported. It's not acceptable for computers that cost $1,299 and more to have keyboards that break because of small amounts of dust.

The lawsuit is seeking damages from Apple to cover the legal fees, to pay for the cost of replacing the parts, and to reimburse consumers for expenses already incurred.

Apple has yet to officially respond to the lawsuit and they have also to acknowledge what could be the reason behind the flaw.

When a user reports a faulty keyboard, they can bring it to an Apple Store for fix. The company has a few options: It can either recall the laptops or extend its warranty service to offer free repairs to all users with the defective product. Others had to foot the entire $700 bill if it was out of warranty. The keyboard on Macbook Pro 2016 models have been said to be failing twice as much as older models, according to an investigation by AppleInsider.

AppleInsider says it collected its data from "assorted Apple Genius Bars in the U.S." that it has worked with for several years, as well as Apple-authorized third-party fix shops.

In June, Apple posted how to clean the keyboard using a can of compressed air. Many users say that this does not solve the problem. Apple chose to design its keyboard in such a way that to replace it, one would also have to replace the upper panel and several attached components.

"The keyboard defect compromises the MacBook's core functionality".

As of May 12, over 19,000 people signed the petition.
