At least 9 killed, 36 wounded in multiple blasts hit Afghan city

Afghan security forces battled a group of attackers who stormed a government building in the eastern city of Jalalabad on Sunday in a coordinated attack that killed at least nine people and wounded dozens, local officials said.

Afghan security forces surrounded the area and were still battling the gunmen hours after the initial explosions.

After a auto bomb was detonated at the entrance to the state accounts office, a group of about four gunmen, armed with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades, rushed the building, the officials said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility of today's blasts.

Security forces and attackers are now fighting each other. More explosions were then heard coming from inside the building.

Public health officials said at least nine people, including a child, had been killed and 36 wounded.

The attack targeted the tax and revenue office of Nangarhar Province in the city center of Jalalabad on May 13. Other terrorist groups, such as Daesh* have also expanded their activities in the country and neighboring states.

The Taliban and ISIS have made clear their intentions to disrupt the elections.

However, the Taliban is now taking part in its annual spring offensive and has launched a number of attacks in recent weeks.

Their Operation Al Khandaq will target United States forces and "their intelligence agents" as well as their "internal supporters", a Taliban statement said on April 25.

The Taliban have seized control of districts across the country, and the two groups have carried out attacks in the Afghan capital, Kabul, in recent months that killed scores of people.
