Gove expresses doubts about Brexit customs plan

Gove expresses doubts about Brexit customs plan

In contrast, the customs partnership will be examined by two Brexiteers - International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and Environment Secretary Michael Gove - and a lone Remainer, Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington.

But the prime minister insisted: "You can trust me to deliver", as she attempted to ease the tensions.

Theresa May has today promised to "deliver the Brexit people voted for" after another week of infighting in her cabinet.

Less than a year until the United Kingdom leaves the EU, Mrs May's government still can't agree what to seek in the exit negotiations.

May said she had proposed different options for a new customs arrangement with the European Union and the government would continue to work on them during the negotiations.

When asked on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show if he agreed with Johnson that the model is "crazy", Gove replied: "With the new customs partnership - Boris pointed out that because it's novel, because no model like this exists, there have to be significant questions marks over the deliverability of it on time".

There are two options under consideration.

The other will look at the "customs partnership" - thought to be the Prime Minister's preferred option and supported by ministers who backed Remain - which would see Britain continue to collect tariffs on behalf of the EU.

The Tory MP, who is also chair of the Treasury Select Committee, also criticised the other proposal being put forward, and said: "It seems to me that's what's called the maximum facilitation - which seems to rely on future technology not yet invented - would absolutely basically be a deal in name only because it doesn't talk about an enduring relationship with the European Union, which I think is what the Prime Minister said she wanted to create, and it causes enormous problems on the island of Ireland".

"This means there can be no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, or between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK", May wrote.

"We just simply think it won't work", Mr Coveney added.

'I will ensure that we take back control of our borders.

Meanwhile, Mrs May has put off sending a key piece of Brexit legislation to the House of Commons after peers repeatedly defeated the government as it passed through the upper House of Lords. Leader Jeremy Corbyn, a lifelong eurosceptic, has so far resisted calls to try to keep Britain in the bloc's single market, arguing that its rules would prevent him from fulfilling policy pledges including taking some businesses into state ownership.
