Salmonella outbreak: More illnesses linked to recalled eggs reported in Virginia

Salmonella outbreak: More illnesses linked to recalled eggs reported in Virginia

Rose Acre Farms' recall is the largest involving eggs since 2010.

People in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Colorado were also affected.

A Salmonella outbreak linked to a massive egg recall expanded last week when 12 more people reported contracting the foodborne illness after eating the popular breakfast food item.

The outbreak has been linked to eggs distributed by Rose Acre Farms, a family-owned business based in IN that describes itself as the second-largest egg producer in the U.S. In New York, eight people have fallen ill in relation to the recall. You can find more information about the egg recall through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The advisory also warned that the tainted eggs should be disposed of, or returned to the place of purchase for a refund.

As of April 16, 35 people from nine states had been sickened by the bacteria.

In grocery stores, the eggs were sold under the following brands: Country Daybreak; Crystal Farms; Coburn Farms; Sunshine Farms; Glenview; Great Value (Walmart's store brand), and Food Lion's store brand.

Rose Acre Farms announced the voluntary recall of 206,749,248 eggs that were sold under several brands and distributed to retail stories and restaurants.

On the packaging of the recalled eggs, consumers can find the plant No. P-1065, and a Julian date range of 011 through date of 102.

Rose Acre Farms told The Washington Post in a Saturday statement it was "disheartened by the additional illnesses".

According to the Post, Rose Acre Farms has come under scrutiny in the past for salmonella contamination.

The CDC's salmonella fact sheet states that the bacteria is responsible for about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths each year in the US, with over 80 percent of the illnesses traced to tainted food. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
