Vitor Belfort suffers a brutal knockout at UFC 224 against Lyoto Machida

Vitor Belfort suffers a brutal knockout at UFC 224 against Lyoto Machida

Anderson Silva put Belfort away with that technique back at UFC 126, and at last night's UFC 224, Lyoto Machida called upon the move - the most basic of karate tools - to knock "The Phenom" out. Both fighters have held the light heavyweight championship in the past, and Belfort came in with the crowd on his side because of fighting in his hometown.

If there was ever a ideal place for Vitor Belfort to retire, then his homeland of Brazil would be the place he would have liked to end his professional career. Machida delivered a rear kick to Belfort's face and did not continue with punches after seeing his opponent was out, ESPN reported.

The finishing kick was eerily similar to the one Machida landed on Randy Couture in what turned out to be the last time "The Natural" stepped foot in an Octagon at UFC 129 in 2011.

No ground and pound needed, the kick was so clean that Belfort was done and dusted.

Belfort, who fought the final fight on his UFC contract, isn't expected to re-sign with the promotion. I want to thank my family - I'm ok. So, congratulations to Machida, and I'm leaving my gloves here.

If you want to tell me that you'd pick anything other than UFC 224 if given a choice of those three fight cards this weekend, I'm going to need a thousand words explaining your logic because it doesn't make sense to me.

More than anything, I think there are just scores of people out there who are nowhere near as interested in the UFC now as they were six, eight, 10 years ago, and who only care about a handful of competitors but still fancy themselves hardcore fans - and the two just don't compute.

Machida showed respect for Belfort in his post-fight interview, and Belfort's career will end with a 26-14-1 record.

Former lightweight champion Vitor Belfort announced his retirement Saturday after losing to former champion Lyota Machida at UFC 224.
