White House Goes Silent on Remark about McCain

White House Goes Silent on Remark about McCain

A top Republican has urged the White House to speak out against an aide who mocked Senator John McCain's brain cancer during an internal meeting, but stopped short of calling on U.S. President Donald Trump to apologize. "People have wondered when decency would hit rock bottom with this administration", former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said in a statement.

The White House is refusing to condemn a staffer who said during a closed-door meeting that Arizona Senator John McCain's opinion "doesn't matter" because 'he's dying anyway.' White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says the aide, Kelly Sadler, still works for the White House. "This was a private meeting inside the White House". McCain has always denied giving up harmful information when he was a prisoner of war and when critics distributed a flyer during the 2008 SC presidential primary claiming he did, it was debunked by the fact-finding website PolitiFact. "It happened yesterday", Biden said.

The next day, Meghan McCain said on The View that she was shocked Sadler was still employed by the White House.

A White House spokesman did not dispute the report and issued a statement on behalf of the White House: "We respect Senator McCain's service to our nation and he and his family are in our prayers during this hard time". It was a joke that fell flat, a White House official told CNN. "Our children learn from our example. I am certain it will be John's". McCain was captured and endured 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war.
