Facebook suspends 200 apps amid data misuse investigation

Facebook suspends 200 apps amid data misuse investigation

This statement comes after an audit that was initiated due to Cambridge Analytica scandal. So far, the investigation has seen Facebook suspend around 200 apps.

Facebook says the investigation process is in full swing and it is being carried out in two phases. The app collected data such as user location, friends, and interests.

Archibong today said the investigation, which is being carried out by "internal and external experts", has led to the suspension of 200 apps.

The investigation is ongoing but the site has confirmed hundreds of apps have so far been suspended, pending further analysis of their behaviour.

A statement attributed to Facebook VP of partnerships Ime Archibong read: "W$3 e are now investigating the app, and if mypersonality refuses to cooperate or fails our audit, we will ban it".

Archibong added that Facebook will be conducting interviews with and submitting requests for informations to any developers' whose apps raise concerns. The scandal you would recall sept through the internet like a tornado; but Facebook had since been making some sweeping changes. The investigation is in response to the Cambridge Analytica situation.

The social media giant stated that there is a lot more work to be done and it will take time to identify all apps that have misused user data.

If Facebook discovers an app has misused data, it will instantly "ban" the app, and then post information on this page to let users know if the banned apps had access to their data.

Facebook suspended the myPersonality app on April 7, though it's unclear when the company learned anyone could have accessed the data.

Thousands of apps have already been screened, and around 200 apps have already been suspended for either rejecting the RFI or violating data access policies.

The app offered a personality test, but Facebook users who downloaded it also gave the professor permission to collect data on their location, their friends and content they had "liked".

To set users' anxious minds at ease after news of the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke, Facebook released a handy-dandy "did you get screwed by us?" tool meant to notify you if a third party "bad actor" abused your data.
