MI5 head speaks out on Russian Federation & calls for unity in security

Director General of the British intelligence service MI5 Andrew Parker has called Russian Federation a "protagonist" in the campaign to undermine Western democracies.

The head of MI5 is to deliver Britain's strongest condemnation yet of Russian Federation as he criticises its "flagrant breaches" of global law in a rare public attack on a foreign power.

President Vladimir Putin claims that British allegations are "nonsense" but that Moscow is willing to cooperate with London on the probe.

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied it was involved in the nerve agent attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

Parker is expected to call for the need to "shine a light through the fog of lies. out of their propaganda machine".

Skripal, 66, remains in hospital following the attack in the Wiltshire city on March 4.

Following considerable work behind the scenes by MI5 and its sister agency MI6, 28 European countries agreed to support the United Kingdom by expelling diplomats in solidarity.

In December last year, Parker had revealed that nine terrorist attacks had been prevented by the UK's security services and police since 52-year-old Khalid Masood drove a auto into pedestrians before launching a knife attack after crashing into the side of the Parliament, killing five people on March 22 last year.

The British Government has pointed the finger at Russian Federation, but Moscow has repeatedly denied responsibility.

Parker will argue that despite its heavy losses and retreat in Syria and Iraq, the Islamic State still presents a threat to Western democracies and "still aspires to direct devastating and more complex attacks".

However the MI5 chief will express confidence to tackle impending threats in coordination with the UK's "European partners".

He will say: "European intelligence cooperation today is simply unrecognisable to what it looked like five years ago".

He stated that 12 plots had been prevented since the Westminster attack, meaning a total of 25 attacks had been disrupted since 2013, and praised the work of the Counter Terrorism Group (CTG), which includes all 28 European Union member states, as well as Switzerland and Norway for its work.

The speech will be directed to the Counter Terrorism Group which is compromised of intelligence heads from 30 European security services.

Mr Parker will spell out why an effective security partnership between the United Kingdom and Europe is more operationally vital than ever before.
