Petition to initiate treason case against Nawaz Sharif filed in Pak court

Petition to initiate treason case against Nawaz Sharif filed in Pak court

The former premier approached what is seen as a red line in the country by touching on criticism of Pakistan's armed forces, especially their alleged use of proxies in India, in the interview with Dawn newspaper published over the weekend.

To a question at a press conference here, Ms. Sitharaman said, "It is very serious disclosure".

Pakistan has come under pressure from the United States and India to do more, however, to shut down groups such as the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqani Network and Lashkar-e-Taiba, which target USA forces in Afghanistan or Indian forces in the disputed region of Kashmir. "It is about time to put an end to this insane adventurism and start spending money on projects that actually serve common Pakistanis, such as education, health and human development", he added. "Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and I stand behind our Quaid".

To a query on Karnataka exit polls, she said the BJP would form the government in the State.

"The PML-N would like to set the record straight on the interview of PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif carried on Saturday by Dawn", the spokesman stated. Additionally, Sharif's statement has been slammed by his PMLN's major opponents, the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, who have claimed he is merely parroting the narrative put forward by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The meeting reviewed the recent statement in the context of the Mumbai attacks, as it appeared in the Daily Dawn of 12th May 2018, and unanimously termed this statement as incorrect and misleading", said an official handout released by the government after the meeting.

Sharif, who was answering a question about his ouster, steered the conversation towards foreign policy and national security by saying that Pakistan has isolated itself in worldwide arena despite giving sacrifices in war on terror.

Gen. Asif Ghafoor, the head of the Pakistani military's Inter-Services Public Relations directorate, announced that the military had "suggested" a meeting of the National Security Council to "discuss recent misleading media statement regarding Bombay incident". Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi chaired the meeting.

"I have clarified those (statements)", Mr Abbasi asserted.

With Sharif's remarks gaining traction in India, the NSC sought to turn tables and blamed the government over delay in conclusion of the 26/11 case. "Why can't we complete the trial?" - a reference to the Mumbai attacks-related trials which have stalled in a Rawalpindi anti-terrorism court.

Sharif, who was ousted last July by the country's top court for hiding a foreign work visa, a year ago also irked the army over suggesting the military's weakness in the face of militant groups.

Nawaz, in response, had dispelled the notion that the comments were falsely attributed to him, saying that he would speak the truth come what may.

"We need to stay firm and learn from the fate of other Muslim countries which were deteriorated and have been pushed to the never ending political, social, economic and administrative crisis", he said.
