Piyush Goyal to handle Finance Ministry until Arun Jaitley recovers

Senior political figures, including home minister Rajnath Singh, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, and former finance minister P. Chidambaram wished Jaitley a speedy recovery on Twitter. Meanwhile, Piyush Goyal has been handed over additional charge of Finance Ministry till the indisposition of incumbent Arun Jaitley.

Prime Minister on Monday temporarily assigned charge of the ministries of finance and corporate affairs to railway minister till recovers from a kidney transplant, while removing the controversy-scarred from the high-profile I&B ministry.

Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore be assigned the independent charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in place of Smriti Zubin Irani, presently Minister of Information and Broadcasting, the release said.

Among other changes, S.S. Ahluwalia, a minister of state, has been given the portfolio of electronics and information technology, replacing Alphons Kannanthanam. Irani cancelled her trip to Cannes where a strong Indian delegation is attending the film festival.

Jaitley's surgery was successful at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with both recipient and donor recovering well.

These developments are said to have occurred following several recent controversies that rocked the I&B ministry after Smriti Irani took over. Goyal is among a handful of ministers considered efficient and go-getters.

In early April, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry had announced action against journalists purporting "fake news" by removing the concerned journalists' accreditation, a move which was withdrawn by the PMO after criticism from the public. Her erstwhile ministry was always in news for making some controversial decisions when she was at the helm of affairs.

Goyal's first task will be to steer the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council that is in the midst of deliberating on some key issues.
