Trump thanks North Korea for 'smart' move

Trump thanks North Korea for 'smart' move

With less than a month left before the hugely-anticipated talks between Trump and the North Korean leader in Singapore, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo implied on Sunday that Washington will have to assure North Korea it won't seek to undermine Kim Jong-un.

North Korea says it will dismantle its Punggye-ri test site between May 23 and 25 in the presence of local and global media.

"This will be Americans coming in - private-sector Americans, not the USA taxpayer - helping build the energy grid", Pompeo said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday".

North Korea for decades has been pushing a concept of "denuclearization" that bears no resemblance to the American definition.

American companies have been barred from such investments in the Hermit Kingdom for years. Pompeo added that Americans will also help invest in North Korean infrastructure and agriculture to help feed its people if the country meets U.S. demands.

The three Americans who were freed from detention in North Korea last week were reunited with their family days after being welcomed back to the states by President Trump and first lady Melania Trump, the Pentagon announced Sunday.

North Korea has announced it will hold a ceremony in late May for the dismantling of its nuclear test site; before the summit with President Trump.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un gives opening remarks at the 5th Conference of Cell Chairpersons of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang on December 22,2017.

He said that means the elimination of North Korea uranium enrichment facilities and the dismantling of its nuclear weapons arsenal.

After Saturday's announcement, President TrumpDonald John TrumpRomney denounces pastor slated to speak at United States embassy in Jerusalem Pentagon finds problems with Kushner-backed health program: report Apple CEO Tim Cook praises Parkland, "Me Too" activists in commencement speech MORE thanked North Korea for its "gracious gesture".

The United States and North Korea are said to have shared, to a certain extent, an interpretation of denuclearization during the Pompeo-Kim meeting.

"It'd be the best money we ever spent", Graham told host Margaret Brennan. However, Pyongyang has yet to say whether it will give up its nuclear weapons and dismantle related facilities other than Punggye-ri. One fact that aligns USA interests with South Korea's is that we station over 20,000 USA military personnel and a substantial number of their dependents in the part of the country that would be the scene of intense fighting in a conflict with North Korea. "I'm not trying to unify South and North Korea. I'm trying to stop an unstable regime from having more weapons that can hit America".

During Xi and Kim's meeting in Dalian, China, on May 7 and 8, Kim sounded Xi out regarding the possibility that North Korea could receive economic support from China during the denuclearization process, according to the source.
