United States embassy jubilantly opens in Jerusalem as Gaza rages

United States embassy jubilantly opens in Jerusalem as Gaza rages

On the bloodiest single day for Palestinians since the Gaza conflict in 2014, Israeli troops shot dead 55 Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border on Monday as the United States opened its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem.

Dan Shapiro, the US ambassador to Israel under President Barack Obama, told CBS News foreign correspondent Seth Doane the embassy move could be a good thing, but only if it was paired with a promise of a USA embassy to a future Palestinian state in east Jerusalem as part of a two-state solution.

"I'd like to congratulate you and the State of Israel for the historic step of moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem, which was completed today with much excitement", Deri wrote in his letter to Netanyahu.

The White House blamed Palestinian militant group Hamas after Israeli troops in Gaza shot and killed more than 50 Palestinians during protests over the move of the USA embassy to Jerusalem.

Most countries consider East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed after capturing it in the 1967 Middle East War, to be occupied territory, including the Old City, home to sites considered holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians alike. The Israeli military said three of those killed were armed militants who tried to place explosives near the fence. More than 2,200 Gaza residents have been wounded in that time by Israeli fire. "They are trying to break the fence to enter into Israel and to attack the communities next to the fence".

In a video address that aided at the ceremony's opening, Trump said the USA still remains "fully committed" to pursing a Mideast peace deal.

The health officials said 900 Palestinians were wounded, about 450 of them by live bullets, Gulf News reported.

Its authors - Mr Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and his lawyer Jason Greenblatt - concluded that shaking up the status quo could help their efforts by giving the Palestinians a dose of reality, says former Mid-East negotiator Aaron David Miller.

The U.N.'s dislike for Israel is obvious.

Kushner said it was possible for both sides in the conflict to gain more than give in any peace deal.

Macron called for restraint and de-escalation and stressed the need for the protests in the coming days to remain peaceful, the French presidency said.

Netanyahu has always been a critic of the nuclear deal with Iran, which Trump abandoned last week despite complaints from other US allies. "At the request of the Department of State, and in coordination with host nations, the Department of Defense has deployed additional Marine Security Guards to several USA embassies for the goal of temporarily augmenting security", Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr.

"If it were me, it would be a radically different panel", said Rep. Francis Rooney of Florida, in an interview on CNN. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the US move flouted global law.

A report by the BBC said that more protests were planned for Tuesday adding that these were the culmination, as they mark the anniversary of Israel's creation in 1948 and what Palestinians term the Nakba or Catastrophe.

"The U.S.is not a mediator anymore", Abbas said.

While South Africa has maintained its position in support of Palestine, a number of African countries joined in the celebration of the opening of the United States embassy in Jerusalem.
