California Sees 45-Percent Increase In STDs Over 5 Years

California Sees 45-Percent Increase In STDs Over 5 Years

Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD; the rates are highest in 20 to 24-year-old women.

Another concerning number from the state health agency is that 30 stillbirths occurred in California due to syphilis. New at-home kit promises to be the Amazon of STD testingThat's a 45 percent increase compared to five years ago.

CDPH noted that 2017 was the "fifth consecutive year for increases in the number of infants born with congenital syphilis", and that there were 278 congenital syphilis cases, including 30 stillbirths, in California last year.

Overall, the number of STD cases has been climbing in the U. S. In 2016, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 2 million cases of syphilis, chlamydia or gonorrhea-the highest ever recorded, with California near the top.

Meanwhile, California health authorities are doing just about all they can do, with limited resources, to combat the problem.

"My goal is to eliminate congenital syphilis cases in LA County", said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Earlier this year, AHF put up a series of billboards warning that "Syphilis is Serious" with the same link to get free testing.

There is a clinic at Kern Public Health.

Transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy or delivery, congenital syphilis can lead to premature birth, low birth weight, blindness, hearing loss and birth defects, among other issues, according to CDPH.

The "public health safety net" Klausner refers to has been decimated by budget cuts since the 2008 financial crisis.

'For sexual health, primary care wasn't the most effective method, ' Bauer said. While health officials encourage routine screening for STD's, they mention that emerging strains of gonorrhea are outpacing available antibiotics.

Reported instances of syphilis also increased. As many as 218,710 cases of chlamydia were recorded, marking the highest rate since 1990.

"While there are advocates and champions for cancer, nobody is out there saying, 'I have gonorrhea and these are the best ways to treat it.' There's no one out there being a champion for these conditions". "We all need to keep making the public aware of and encourage sexually-active individuals to get tested for STDs on a regular basis-and be treated, if and as necessary-and to also use tools like condoms to prevent or reduce the likelihood of infections".
