Danish director's film leads to walkouts, outrage at Cannes

The blackly comic thriller, which stars Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, follows the murder spree of a serial killer over the course of several decades.

The critics and attendees responding to The House That Jack Built exhibited numerous typical scandalized responses to movies, including haughty high dudgeon ("he mutilates children... we are all there in formal dress expected to watch it?"), assignations of moral culpability, declarations that some depictions of violence become " not art", and projection against a theoretical "filmbro" dumb enough to like it.

No stranger to controversy, the Danish director was banned from Cannes in 2011 after jokingly saying he admired Hitler and was a Nazi. The House That Jack Built's plot synopsis: "USA in the 1970s". According to a report,"It's disgusting", said one woman as she left the screening.

Lars von Trier has a new movie on the horizon, and if you're familiar with his work, you probably won't be surprised to learn that the movie looks predictably unhinged. More than 100 people have walked out of Lars von Trier's 'The House That Jack Built, ' which depicts the mutilation of women and children. I've never seen Cannes issue screening tickets with a trigger warning before ("scènes violentes"), but festival officials were perhaps wise to make an exception this time.

Taking to social media, numerous members of the press have already deemed the film to showcase continuously "vile" footage and have stated that the movie "should not have been made".

The trailer, which alludes to the life of the killer and how he sees the world, is full of blood and gore - which only rattled the anxiety around the film's upcoming release.

We experience the story from Jack's point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself.

Despite the mass walk-out, other viewers appeared to enjoy the movie and it was given a standing ovation at the end of its airing. Let us know what you think.
