Flags are half-staff to honor Peace Officers Memorial Day

The New Providence Police officers raised nearly $6,000 in order to ride and spent an additional $2,000 of their own funds to purchase bicycles, uniforms and additional items needed for the three day ride. We also take this opportunity to pay tribute to law enforcement personnel who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.

It is important for everyone to remember that being a police officer can be, and very often is, a unsafe profession.

The national monument now contains the names of 21,541 officers from all 50 states, US territories and national agencies who died in the line of duty throughout USA history since 1791.

On Tuesday evening, the state Capitol building windows on two floors will be lit to display a Thin Blue Line, which symbolizes the line of law enforcement that stands between chaos and order. During those years, at least four of his fellow officers were killed in the line of duty. So far, in 2018, there have been 51 law enforcement deaths in the United States. Nationally, 135 officers were killed in 2017. This is 75 percent higher than this time a year ago.

An estimated 30,000 people attended the ceremony in person, including surviving family members, friends, law enforcement colleagues, and others. He will forever be in our hearts and forever be in our minds.

If it sounds hard to go through a day not knowing when a seemingly routine incident will suddenly turn unsafe, then consider what it must be like for the families and loved ones of police officers, who never know if their parent, sibling, spouse, child, will be called into a deadly situation.
