Muqtada al-Sadr Alliance Wins Elections in Iraq

Muqtada al-Sadr Alliance Wins Elections in Iraq

Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is facing a shock defeat in the country's first election since declaring victory over Islamic State in December.

Populist cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, a long-time adversary of the United States, has all but won Iraq's parliamentary election, the electoral commission said, in a surprise turn of fortune for the Shiite leader.

However, Sadr's coalition looks unlikely to win enough seats to form a government in its own right, and is likely to begin talks with other candidates to name a new prime minister.

Sadr has led two uprisings against USA forces in Iraq and is one of the few Shia leaders to distance himself from Iran.

The announcement came just over 24 hours after polls closed across the country amid record low voter turnout.

Abadi - a consensus figure favoured by the U.S. - had been seen as likely frontrunner after declaring victory over the militants five months ago.

Mr. Sadr, who once called for attacks on American forces, capitalized on this widespread discontent by rebranding himself in recent years as a champion of the poor, a firebrand against corruption and a patriot who rails against outside interference by Iran as well as America.

Sadr is likely to face fierce opposition from established political forces, who may look to coalesce in a bid to stop him taking control.

The coalition government will likely take months to be negotiated and formed, and this could also impact Iraq's new oil contracts and have global oil companies hanging to see what the investment and contract climate will be like.

Political sources told AFP news agency on Tuesday that Tehran was already pushing meetings among his Shia rivals to seek a way to head off Sadr.

Also in the mix is ex-prime minister Nuri al Maliki, a divisive figure blamed for losing territory to Daesh and stirring sectarianism, who has cultivated ties with Iran.

Sadr's bloc did not run in the remaining two provinces, Kurdish Dohuk and the ethnically mixed oil province of Kirkuk.

Seats in parliament will be allocated proportionately to coalitions once all votes are counted.
