Peru captain Paolo Guerrero banned from World Cup in doping case

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero banned from World Cup in doping case

But, per Sky Sports, the Court of Arbitration (CAS) for Sport upheld an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency to extend said ban after it expired this month.

The 34-year-old had an initial one-year ban reduced to six months by Federation Internationale de Football Association and he returned to action for Brazilian club Flamengo earlier this month before being named in his country's provisional squad for their first World Cup since 1982.

Guerrero was initially banned for one year in December after testing positive for cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine after his country's 0-0 draw in their World Cup qualifier against Argentina in Buenos Aires on October 6.

CAS says Guerrero will be banned for 14 months which lasts until January.

The 34-year-old Guerrero returned to professional football sport with Brazilian side Flamengo just last week.

Paolo Guerrero, who at one point wasn't heading to the cup and then was, officially won't be at the tournament after the Court of Arbitration for Sport imposed a 14-month ban on the player.

Peru fans showed their support for him in Geneva. They questioned the CAS's intentions for the ban despite admitting that Guerrero was not significantly negligent and his intention was not to enhance his performance.

The ban, backdated to November, was reduced to six months less than two weeks later after the player protested to FIFA's appeal committee, meaning he was eligible for the World Cup.

The CAS Panel confirmed the existence of an ADRV committed by Mr Guerrero but also accepted that he did not attempt to enhance his performance by ingesting the prohibited substance. WADA, on the other hand, had requested that the FIFA AC decision be set aside and that Paolo Guerrero be sanctioned with a period of ineligibility between 1 and 2 years with an expressed preference for 22 months.

Guerrero has scored 32 goals for his nation and helped the Peruvian national team finish third in the 2011 and 2015 Copa Americas when he was leading scorer in both contests.

This is the second ruling by CAS that has a huge impact on Peru's 2018 World Cup journey.
