Polls open in Pennsylvania primary election

Polls open in Pennsylvania primary election

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, dean of the state's congressional delegation, is being challenged by Republican Gerardo Serrano.

Deciding on a state treasurer and setting up Nebraska legislative matchups for the general election, headlines the election.

Second: The crowded field for the Democratic nomination for the Benton County Board of Commissioners has renewed a thought that we've entertained from time to time. But a three-way field that includes a progressive activist pastor backed by Bernie Sanders's Our Revolution organization (Greg Edwards), Allentown City Solicitor Susan Ellis Wild, supported by EMILY's List, and blue-doggy-ish Northampton County DA John Morganelli (who has taken conservative positions on abortion and immigration) has created some suspense. Regardless of what happens today, Democratic Gov. Kate Brown remains the favorite to win in November. The names of the candidates for the Republican Party nomination for that office will appear on the ballot in all Albemarle County voting precincts. Wealthy philanthropist Scott Wallace and military veteran Rachel Reddick are the leading candidates in the Democratic primary. Recriminations could weaken the victor in November.

Also on tap are contested primaries for lieutenant governor and a slew of crowded U.S. House races following Pennsylvania's court-ordered redrawing of congressional district boundaries. (Jim Renacci won his primary for Ohio Senate, but failed to crack 50% against relatively weak competition.) Rep. Raul Labrador is the next Republican congressman up for a promotion, and he is in a tough race against Lt. Gov. Brad Little and businessman Tommy Alquist. Their choices for governor are Scott R. Wagner of York County, Paul Mango and Laura Ellsworth, both of Allegheny County. Wagner is from southeast Pennsylvania, and his two opponents are both from near Pittsburgh.

Kentucky residents will head to the polls in a midterm primary election with nominations up for grabs in the U.S. House and the Legislature.

Opposition to President Donald Trump, a redrawn congressional map and a string of Republican retirements in the state have opened the door for Democrats to pick up as many as half a dozen seats.

In Idaho, Republican Governor Butch Otter is retiring, and the GOP primary is a classic three-way Establishment/ideologue/"outsider" affair.

Lt. Gov. Brad Little is seeking the GOP nomination, with Otter's endorsement, while Tommy Ahlquist, an emergency room doctor turned developer, hopes his outsider status carries him as it did IN businessman Mike Braun IN last week's GOP Senate primary.

She is a member of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, in which her grandparents held key leadership positions, and has deep roots in Idaho, which is one of America's whitest states, according to the U.S. Census. She's picked up all the national endorsements, from Planned Parenthood to People for Bernie Sanders.

OR is among eight states where Democrats control the governorship and both houses of the state legislature.

Votes are due no later than 8 p.m. and voters can submit their ballots to any designated drop site or local elections office.

It is too late to mail in ballots.

"We always think the primaries are very important and you have to pay attention to what's going on".
