Seattle Mariners' Robinson Cano Gets 80-Game Ban

Seattle Mariners' Robinson Cano Gets 80-Game Ban

In one of Major League Baseball's most stunning performance-enhancing drug busts this decade, Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was suspended for 80 games for violating the game's drug policy, taking down one of the game's highest paid players and a likely future Hall of Famer.

The league announced on Tuesday that Cano tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic, which is in violation of MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

In a statement released by the players' union, Cano said a doctor in his native Dominican Republic prescribed the medication to treat an unspecified medical ailment.

Furosemide, normally sold under the brand name Lasix, blocks sodium, chloride and water from being reabsorbed into the blood before becoming urine, thus causing an increase in urination.

After Martin made that determination, the union filed a grievance last month. Cano seemed prime to one day join the 3,000 Hit Club, as he sits fewer than 600 knocks away with five years remaining on his contract. Cano is an eight-time All-Star but now must deal with the stigma of a suspension.

"Robinson made a mistake". It is the first PED suspension in his 14-year career. "Our organisation fully supports the programme". He has explained to us what happened, accepted the punishment and has apologized to the fans, the organization and his team-mates.

The suspension comes on the heels of Cano suffering the first significant injury of his tenure in Seattle.

Cano suffered a broken fifth metacarpal on his right hand after being hit by a pitch from Tigers' reliever Blaine Hardy on Sunday, and he was placed on the disabled list Monday. Since 2007, Cano has played at least 150 games each season.

Cano, 35, is batting.287 with four home runs and 23 RBIs this season.

Major League Baseball said the suspension is effective immediately. He will lose his salary for the 80 games, an accumulation of more than $11 million.
