Tony Pulis: 'One set play cost Middlesbrough over two playoff games'

Tony Pulis: 'One set play cost Middlesbrough over two playoff games'

That was the closest either side came to changing the scoreline as they now switch attention to the second leg at Villa Park on Tuesday.

Villa hold a 1-0 first leg lead thanks to Mile Jedinak's goal but Pulis revealed the mood among the Boro camp remains very upbeat.

At the heart of that defence was former Chelsea and England centre back John Terry who joined the club past year on a free transfer and whose appointment as captain appears to have had a significant impact. The boys are different class.

"I'm not concerned about Aston Villa, I'm more concerned about us and the way we play and what we're trying to achieve. Another clean sheet and a great night", Terry said.

"I'm very, very proud of the lads".

"The boys have been superb and we're off to Wembley, one more to go".

The clubs will pay tribute to former Aston Villa defender Jlloyd Samuel, who sadly passed away at the age of 37 following a auto crash in Cheshire this morning.

Boro created few clear-cut chances but nearly levelled the tie late on when Stewart Downing's 89th-minute free kick from just outside the penalty area rattled the crossbar.

"We've given ourselves a chance, we've given ourselves a small advantage, but we've been around long enough to know that we can't get carried away with it, that's for sure".

"A set play has really cost us over two games", Pulis told Sky Sports News at the end of the second leg.

He made 44 appearances for Steve Bruce's side, assisting five times, helping them finish fourth in the Championship, which qualified them for the playoffs.

The home fans erupted in wild celebrations at fulltime and flooded onto the pitch to join the players.

Middlesbrough, who trail 1-0, could be without defender Daniel Ayala.

Steve Bruce's side will now face Fulham at Wembley on May 26 for a spot in next season's Premier League.

"We needed a break and I don't think we got one".
