HOOPS HOAX: Man, 25, allegedly posed as teen to play basketball

HOOPS HOAX: Man, 25, allegedly posed as teen to play basketball

Richardson ISD says Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley attended one day of classes at Richardson High School last fall.

A 25-year-old man was arrested by Texas officials after it was discovered he posed as a 17-year-old in order to enroll in a high school and play on the basketball team.

Gilstrap-Portley was named the offensive player of the year in his district, and was apparently convincing enough to fool Dallas ISD superintendent Michael Hinojosa.

DISD told WFAA that when a student enrolls and claims they are homeless or an evacuee due to a natural disaster, federal law exempts them from requiring documents they might not have. Gilstrap-Portley may have scammed his way in with just immunization and physical records, a district rep says. Things reportedly fell apart for him after he played in a tournament in April, and was recognized by one of his former coaches from North Mesquite High School, where he was on the basketball team as a real teenager seven years ago. A mother told the Morning News on condition of anonymity that he dated her 14-year-old daughter.

"I'm upset, frustrated, angry and sad at the same time", the mother said. As it was, Rashun Sidney Richardson had traveled an unusual path, to say the least, to become the Panthers' leading scorer, considering that he transferred there in October as a 17-year-old freshman who was a Hurricane Harvey refugee. He faces a charge of tampering with government records.

He later moved to Hillcrest High School and played on the basketball team there. "So it's gonna cause us to go back and look was there anything we could have done to prevent this situation".

School officials, meanwhile, notified parents of the freakish incident in a letter Monday and vowed to review the district's policies, KXAS reports.

"He was very quiet, he was low key in the hallways", said Chris Bayer, Hillcrest High School principal.

Gilstrap-Portley enrolled at Hillcrest, saying he was homeless after being displaced by the storm.

"He took that as an opportunity to gain access to our schools", Dallas Independent School District spokeswoman Robyn Harris told the Dallas Morning News. But the woman said her daughter told her she did not have a sexual relationship with Gilstrap-Portley, whom she never met but had spoken to on the phone.

Ah, high school. So many memories.
