Malaysian police raid home of ex-PM Najib

Malaysian police raid home of ex-PM Najib

When asked whether Najib would be arrested, he said: "There is no indication that they (the police) will do it". He and other spectators were kept off the road by a police cordon.

More than 100 journalists and onlookers were outside Najib's family home past midnight.

The national Bernama news agency cited sources as saying that the police were looking for documents related to 1MDB, and that several boxes were loaded into a police truck.

He also confirmed that police had simultaneously raided an apartment belonging to Najib.

His pardon paves the way for him to dive back into national politics as the presumptive successor to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad who - in Anwar's absence - led the democratic wave that toppled the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. I must thank the people of Malaysia.

As Mahathir officially took up office on Monday, a complaint against Najib was lodged with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commisison (MACC) by Abdul Razak Idris, its former investigations and intelligence director. "For this, we will contact the governments of the countries to recover the money there", Mahathir said.

However, ahead of the 2018 general election he joined forces with Mahathir to topple Najib Razak's Barisan Nasional coalition party, which had been in power for nearly six decades.

"I've told Tun Mahathir, I don't need to serve in the cabinet for now", Anwar said, using an honorific for the prime minister.

Najib started the 1MDB fund in 2009, and U.S. investigators say at least US$4.5 billion was stolen and laundered by Najib's associates, some of which landed in his bank account.

Late Wednesday, Mahathir, who gained a reputation as an authoritarian ruler during a previous stint in power between 1981 and 2003, told reporters arrests would only be made when there was clear evidence of wrongdoing.

"It depends on the particular actions we can carry out to remove them from being part of the government", he said.

Apart from the United States, 1MDB money is also said to be in Switzerland and Singapore.

If true, it could be an ominous sign for Najib, who has already been barred from leaving the country and is expected to face prosecution.

Rising oil prices, amid geopolitical tensions, may help to offset a drop in tax income as Malaysia is a net energy exporter. "Together we will ensure the smooth transition that Malaysians can be proud of".

A lawyer for Najib, who was ousted from office in last week's general election, said police seized handbags and a few other personal items from Najib's home in connection with a money laundering probe.

Former Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim received a royal pardon Wednesday and was released after serving three years of his five-year sentence.
