Nassar sex abuse victims, US university reach $500m settlement

Nassar sex abuse victims, US university reach $500m settlement

During a remarkable series of court hearings in Michigan, dozens of women came forward to speak out against Nassar as well as the institutions that they said protected him, including Michigan State. Beneath the settlement, $425 million might be paid to present claimants and $75 million might be put aside for any future claims.

The disgraced doctor was already going to spend the rest of his life in jail for two previous sentences: between 40 and 175 years on a separate but related case in a different county, as well as 60 years in federal prison for child abuse images.

The settlement in principle was agreed to by the MSU Board of Trustees during a conference call held Tuesday night, May 15. "We acknowledge the necessity for change on our campus and in our neighborhood round sexual assault consciousness and prevention".

The settlement announced on Wednesday does not include USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic Committee and other parties. Interim President John Engler last month told state lawmakers that settlements should not lead to an increase in tuition fees, the university newspaper State News reported.

Lindsey Lemke, a former MSU gymnast, said she hoped the settlement would bring what she has called long-overdue change in how the university responds to abuse claims. The aforementioned resignation of the leadership of USA Gymnastics, the resignation of USOC CEO Scott Blackmun (which was in part due to diagnosis of prostate cancer and in part due to public pressure to resign), and the departure of USA Gymnastics from the famed Karolyi Ranch, where much of Nassar's abuse went on, are some of the major changes we've seen resulting from Nassar's very public conviction.

"This historic settlement came about through the bravery of more than 300 women and girls who had the courage to stand up and refuse to be silenced", John Manly, the California lawyer representing the survivors, said in a statement. He's serving three jail sentences that can possible preserve him locked up for all times.

Many top American gymnasts, including Simone Biles and Aly Raisman, have said Nassar sexually abused them.

I remain deeply disappointed at the missed opportunity for meaningful reform at the university. Since that time, even more accusers have stepped forward, which accounts for the larger number of people covered by the Michigan State agreement. Victims alleged that Michigan State covered up Nassar's abuse and ignored reports of sexual misconduct. University spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said school leaders will now work on a way to pay the bill.

The varsity has about 39,000 undergraduate college students.

Michigan State's settlement dwarfs the settlements paid out by Penn State, another Big Ten school, to the victims of Jerry Sandusky in terms of volume, but not ratio.

The scandal rocked Michigan State, leading to the resignation of President Lou Anna Simon on January 24 and athletic director Mark Hollis two days later.

Years after physical abuse, the emotional scars are still there, and the half-billion dollar settlement aims to help the healing.
