Ramadan fasting commences tomorrow, Sultan declares

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan or Ramzan will begin on Thursday in India after the moon was sighted in New Delhi and Lucknow.

He said the new moon was sighted in various places across the country that includeed Sokoto, Niger, Yobe, Port Harcourt, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa and other areas.

This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Arrangements have begun for "namaz-e-taraveeh", special prayers offered every night throughout the month. "It is important to use the opportunity of the fast to pray and seek the face of Allah for peace and progress of our dear country".

Sri Lanka Muslims begins Ramadan Fast on Friday-18 May, while majority of the Muslims world over begins their fast on Thursday - 17th May.

The main objective of keeping fast is to get closer to the Almighty Allah. They can consume Suhoor (meal before dawn) and break the fast by having Iftaar (meal post sunset).

"Consequently, tomorrow becomes the first day of Ramadan and I urge Muslims in the country to commence fasting according to the teaching of Islam", he said.

"In accordance with the Islamic injunctions, we announce today Wednesday 1439A.H which is equivalent to May 16, 2018 has marked the end of the month of Shaaban 1439A.H. which followed reliable reports duly verified and certified by states and national moon sighting committees".

"Working hours for the public-sector employees will be from 9am until 2pm across the UAE, whereas working hours for the private sector have been shortened by two hours, according to the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources".
