SoCal Building Explosion Investigated As Intentional

SoCal Building Explosion Investigated As Intentional

Stephanie Montessi is tearfully reunited with her daughter Madison, 1, who was evacuated from Academy on the Hill preschool after a nearby explosion. None of these children were hurt.

Although the cause of the blast was still unknown, Bommarito said there was "no immediate hazard" to the community, and a bomb squad was sifting through the wreckage inside the structure late Tuesday. Delacourt said accidental causes of the explosion, like a gas main break, had been ruled out.

Authorities are still trying to determine how the device arrived at the location, Delacourt said.

Irene White, a family friend, read a statement Wednesday on behalf of Krajnyak's family. She said the family is cooperating with investigators. The home is believed to be Krajnyak-Vestil's residence.

He said buildings in the area had been damaged by the blast.

Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes said the formal identification of the body is continuing Wednesday but authorities believe the victim is Ildiko Krajnyak, a 40-year-old licensed cosmetologist.

A neighbor who would only identify herself as Tiffany told The Associated Press that Krajnyak lived with her husband and her mother and has a son at Washington State University. Barnes said she was likely the owner of the day spa there.

Associated Press writer Michael Balsamo in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

A deadly explosion at a medical office building in Aliso Viejo is believed to have been an intentional act and is being investigated as a crime, authorities said Wednesday.

In the early morning hours Wednesday, FBI investigators began searching a home in Trabuco Canyon were Krajnyak was believed to have been living with her estranged husband.

The officials say there have been no arrests.

Two of the wounded women suffered "severe" injuries and were taken to local hospitals, where they underwent surgery.

The officials were briefed on the investigation but not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. Two patrons were seriously injured. The spa owner was believed to be the target, one official said.

Sheriff's Cmdr. Dave Sawyer said Tuesday night that the size of the explosion makes it suspicious. He would not say whether the woman killed had been specifically targeted.

"The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the federal law enforcement branch of the U.S. Postal Service, has determined the package in question did not go through the Postal Service mail system".

The items were sent back to the Federal Bureau of Investigation laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, for testing, and police would not comment on the specifics of what they found.

The dead and injured have not been named.

The explosion Tuesday blew out walls and windows of the facility, heavily damaging the first floor corner of the two-story building in Aliso Viejo, about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles, according to Orange County Fire Authority.
