Microsoft to Launch Cheaper Tablet Line to Rival Apple's iPad

Microsoft to Launch Cheaper Tablet Line to Rival Apple's iPad

Microsoft is looking to target a new market for its tablets, Bloomberg reported, with sources saying the company will be launching a cheaper line of Surface tablets in the second half of the year.

The Surface tablet will feature a 10-inch screen, which is similar to Apple's iPad and smaller than Microsoft's Surface Pro laptop range.

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft is planning to compete head-to-head with Apple in this lower-priced tablet market by the end of this year with a new Surface tablet.

Microsoft is reportedly working a smaller, cheaper alternative to the Surface Pro.

On Tuesday, the company released the huge Surface Hub 2 touchscreen, a 50.5-inch device that is created to replace the whiteboard.

Like the iPad, Microsoft's new tablets will incorporate rounded edges.

Considering that the current cheapest version of the Surface Pro is around $799 and the cheapest iPad is $329, this will be a massive step forward for Microsoft when it comes to keeping up with their main competitor.

Although low-powered devices often ship with ARMCPUs, the new tablets will reportedly sport Intel hardware, though chip specifics have yet to be detailed. According to Microsoft, the device has been an enormous hit since then.

Instead, it began to focus on the Surface Pro, a higher end, more expensive version of its tablets. This allows you to place four Surface Hub 2 tablets side by side to make one giant screen or to utilize them individually to display different documents on each screen. Models with built-in LTE are also expected to arrive.

In 2012, Microsoft launched Surface RT, which ran a very limited version of the Windows 8 operating system at a price of $499.

Microsoft revealed the Surface Hub 2 earlier this week in a surprisingly quiet announcement, considering the company just held its huge Build conference the week prior. That would put the new Surface tablets at around nine hours of battery life - not bad, but hardly stellar.
