As Health Commissioner, Dr. Adams presided over Indiana's efforts to deal with the state's unprecedented HIV outbreak.

The Surgeon General tweeted about his experience, saying "They asked if there was a Doctor on board to help with a medical emergency", he wrote. Neither the doctor nor the airline revealed what the passenger's medical issue was.

As per the information from the surgeon general's office, Dr. Jerome Adams was aboard the 1827 Delta flight from Atlanta to Jackson on Wednesday evening when a passenger lost consciousness on the tarmac, before the departure of the flight from the airport.

A broadly smiling Vice Admiral Jerome M. Adams, M.D., M.P.H., the surgeon general of the United States, took to Twitter on Wednesday to deliver a bit of happy news.

After the patient woke up, Adams said it was best the plane return to the gate, and for the patient to be taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Adams telephoned the passenger's spouse to explain the situation and helped escort the individual off the plane to medical personnel waiting at the gate.

Delta tweeted him back thanking Adams for "volunteering as well as your service". Dr. Adams, who started as surgeon general in September 2017, is an anesthesiologist, according to his official biography.

He has public events there Thursday, including a panel discussion on opioid abuse.
