Toto Wolff says issues with Mercedes car delayed Lewis Hamilton contract talks

Toto Wolff says issues with Mercedes car delayed Lewis Hamilton contract talks

A second consecutive win, a one-two finish, a display of sheer dominance and Sebastian Vettel off the podium - the Spanish Grand Prix was just the weekend Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes needed. But in Spain, the higher track temperatures, combined with the long-radius corners, allowed them to get the tyres into the right window.

Vettel added that Tuesday's test day, in which he clocked the third-fastest time behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz (Renault), came at an opportune time, as it allowed Ferrari to get a better understanding of why it had had a "poor weekend" in Spain. "Let's keep this up".

"We do after the five races now have a much, much better understanding of the vehicle, of what we need to do to get the auto to be working - but we still have learning to do, improvements to be made".

Lewis Hamilton started on pole, had a good start and refused to look back for the rest of the race.

Hamilton has only ever won three times in Monaco. Hamilton then came in for fresh tyres leaving Verstappen to inherit the lead. In Spain, though, he was one with his auto again and his claim to victory never under threat.

"It felt really good today", Hamilton told Sky Sports. "It's a good feeling". "This is when we are going to start trying to continue to apply the pressure".

Hamilton's victory means he now leads the standings by 17 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel said he remained upbeat heading into the Monaco Grand Prix in two weeks.

"Why our auto doesn't like to be quick around the corners in Monaco, we haven't found out yet". But the German marque struggled a year ago in Monaco, with Ferrari sweeping to a one-two finish.

With Ferrari now down on Mercedes after the team grabbed a 1-2 at the race last weekend, Vettel says the team knows they have a strong vehicle and have learned how to tackle tracks like Catalunya in the near future.

The streets of Monte Carlo did prove troublesome for Hamilton after he qualified only 14th and took the chequered flag in a lowly seventh place on a weekend to forget. Team boss Toto Wolff said the team's focus had been on beating Ferrari over the past month and would switch to contract talks when a better opportunity arises. "Honestly before the race we expected one stop was not going to be possible - at least to do the race quickly with one stop". "Calmly, we need to analyze the reasons, and they are various, which prevented us from exploiting the potential we demonstrated in the previous races".
