Bernie Sanders announces he will seek re-election

In a statement issued by his campaign, Sanders, who is among the list of possible contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, says it has been an honor to serve the people of Vermont, but more remains to be done.

Sanders says he still has many things to accomplish in the U.S. Senate and his planned announcement on Monday concerning his political future "will not come as a great surprise to anybody in the state of Vermont".

Sanders, an independent senator who caucuses with the Democrats, won his bid for Senate in 2006 and re-election in 2012 by overwhelming margins, according to the Vermont secretary of state's election archive. "My mind is on 2018, and again, I think, the most important midterm election in the modern history of our country".

Sanders' campaign announced he will seek a third term Monday.

He says the 2018 midterm election will be a pivotal moment in USA history and people must fight for an agenda that works for working people.

"You know, Chuck, numerous issues that I campaigned on two years ago - issues like Medicare for all, raising the minimum wage to 15 bucks an hour, and taking on the pharmaceutical industry, making public colleges and universities tuition-free, legalizing marijuana - a few years ago those were seen as radical, fringy ideas", the senator explained.

"That gives conservatives, Republicans, middle-of-the-road voters concern as they've dealt with bureaucracy and seen their tax burdens rise", said Mike Donahue of the Vermont Republican Party.

"Honestly, that's not where my mind is right now", Sanders said.

Several independent candidates have also indicated they plan to seek Sanders' senate seat in November.

Sanders doesn't face a Republican challenger.
