Man's condition in fatal cougar attack upgraded

The mountain bikers were riding together down a remote, backwoods trail at 11am local time in an area near North Bend, Washington state, around 30 miles (48km) east of Seattle, when the they encountered the animal.

"They did everything they were supposed to do", King County sheriff's Sgt. Ryan Abbott said. Instead, face the cougar, speak firmly and slowly back away - appearing as large as possible, such as by standing on a rock or stump or opening a sweatshirt or jacket. He looked back and saw the cougar dragging his friend into the woods, Abbott said.

Last October, the Seattle Bike Blog revealed how he had set up a Seattle chapter of Friends On Bikes to encourage black women and other marginalised people to get cycling.

Authorities plan to match DNA taken from the animal with DNA from the victims to be certain they killed the right cougar. He was hospitalized with deep cuts and tears around his head and throughout his body. "The second victim turned and started to run away".

It took several hours before authorities found the cougar up a tree 50 to 200 yards (45 to 182 meters) away and killed it.

Wildlife officials said veterinarians at Washington State University are examining the cougar's brain to determine why it attacked.

"The fact that it stayed in close proximity with these folks and attacked, and stayed with them is highly, highly unusual", said Capt. Alan Myers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Cougar attacks on humans are extremely rare.

"This is not a normal way that a cougar acts", Abbott said. "Most of the time, they're very afraid".

Once the mountain lion was found officers shot and killed it.

Two victims from a deadly cougar attack in the north-western U.S. state of Washington have been identified.

The 31-year-old man who survived the mauling is awake and alert, but is in satisfactory condition. Sederbaum even hit the cougar with his bike, which caused the cougar to retreat back into the woods.

"The deputies shot at him and spooked him, and he ran off", he said.

Attacks have become more common as people increasingly encroach on the animals' territory.

"Let that mountain lion know you are not a prey animal, it needs to move on, and in nearly all cases it does", Tira said.

Over 6,000 cougars live in Oregon, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

He said that people should fight back.
