Shootout Between Texas School Gunman and Deputies Lasted 25 Minutes

Shootout Between Texas School Gunman and Deputies Lasted 25 Minutes

Inside a packed church sanctuary, the seniors of Santa Fe High School and the prosecutor speaking to them confronted the challenges borne of the shooting that took the lives of 10 people at the school near Houston.

Texas, a conservative stronghold, has some of the most permissive firearm laws in the United States, and new gun restrictions are unlikely.

The discussions will start in Austin, and Abbott says they will include lawmakers, educators, students, parents, gun-rights advocates and shooting survivors.

On Friday morning, during first period, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis went inside Santa Fe High School and shot at students and staff with a shotgun and a.38-caliber revolver, both of which were owned legally by his father, according to authorities.

Her father, Aziz Sheikh, said on Monday he hoped the death of his daughter, who wanted to serve her country as a civil servant or diplomat, would spur gun control in the United States. The Republican has been governor of Texas since 2015. "They see the person as the problem and security as the second problem".

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) has suggested following the shooting that schools should have fewer entrances and exits, which would allow security to better monitor who is coming in and out of the building.

The Republican-controlled legislature is out of session until January 2019, making it almost impossible for the state to implement and fund any major changes that come out of this week's three roundtable discussions.

"We will be increasing police visibility at each school through the remainder of the school year", Greg Smith, the superintendent of schools at Clear Creek, said in a letter. He did not respond to a request for comment.

One program being run out of Texas Tech University in Lubbock to screen students who could harm themselves or others has Abbott's attention.

Investigators have identified the original buyers, but how the weapons moved from them to the shooter is still being determined, the official said. "Please keep the families in your thoughts as they mourn this tragic loss", Roady said. About 1 percent of them were referred to licensed counselors.

Roady told the students that they were "suffering in ways that no one else can understand". A current investigation is fluid, but in the small community of Santa Fe, it is something deeply personal for Sherriff Trochessett, whose granddaughter was just three classrooms away from the shooting.
