Trump Praises New CIA Director Gina Haspel At Her Swearing

Trump touted Haspel's 30-plus years at the agency, saying she has served with "extraordinary skill and devotion". Calling Haspel strong, Trump said the new director would "never back down" in defending America.

Gina Haspel has been sworn in as the first female director of the Central Intelligence Agency at a ceremony attended by US President Donald Trump, despite controversy surrounding her participation in the post-9/11 torture and interrogation program.

But he spent much of his remarks at the time focused on settling scores with the media. She's also been criticized for her role in the destruction of interrogation videotapes.

He added: "The exceptional men and women of this agency deserve exceptional leadership".

".I would be remiss if I did not also note the tremendous pride I take in being the first woman to serve as director".

She told agency staffers that she wants to increase the CIA's foreign language proficiency as well as strengthen the agency's relationships with intelligence agencies in partner nations.

The U.S. Senate confirmed the 33-year veteran intelligence officer to the post 54-45 on May 17 following a public hearing that questioned her role in the "enhanced interrogation" programs of the President George W. Bush administration following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, CNN reported. The Senate confirmed her Thursday by a vote of 54-45, despite deep concerns from Democrats and some Republicans about her role in the agency's brutal interrogations following the 2001 terror attacks.

Haspel, however, sailed through her confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee without any major slip-ups, and former defense and intelligence officials under the Obama administration mounted a campaign to persuade swing Democratic votes. Her refusal to acknowledge torture's immorality is disqualifying. "And after the last few months, I know why that is", she says, referring to her tough confirmation process. Trump is suggesting Brennan is to blame for the Russian Federation probe.

Later on Monday, after his appearance at the swearing-in, President Trump met at the White House with the heads of the DOJ, FBI and the director of national intelligence about the matter.

"I also want to express a special thank you and welcome to Eliza and Zoe who have joined us today".

(There is no evidence that Brennan was the source of the investigation.) Trump was quoting Dan Bongino, a former U.S. Secret Service agent and frequent Fox News commentator.
