Congressional leaders to review information on Russian Federation probe

Congressional leaders to review information on Russian Federation probe

Rep. Thomas J. Rooney, R-Fla., a senior member of the Intelligence Committee, said that he believed Nunes and Gowdy's meeting with senior Justice Department officials would help put to rest some of the circulating concerns and return lawmakers' focus to the matter of election security. "That would be one of the biggest insults that anyone has ever seen", the president said during a White House sitdown with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The Justice Department has in the past offered classified briefings to Nunes, though they have so far refused to turn over documents.

The comments come as Trump is escalating his attacks on special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

With the demand, Trump entered into the realm of applying presidential pressure on the Justice Department regarding an investigation into his own campaign - a move few of his predecessors have made.

Giuliani told HuffPost that Trump needed the information about the informant before deciding whether to agree to an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller. The documents could include details of the Federal Bureau of Investigation informant's role in the probe.

Mr. Rosenstein has been a frequent target of the president.

The Justice Department probe began in March at the request of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and congressional Republicans.

The Justice Department had originally rejected the request from Nunes, saying his request for information "regarding a specific individual" could have severe consequences, including potential loss of human life.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told NPR on Tuesday there is a critical distinction between an investigation like the one the FBI reportedly conducted in 2016 and "spying" or "surveillance" and some other terms used lately.

While the president fumed over surveillance, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen stunned some lawmakers by saying she wasn't aware of the US intelligence assessment that Russia's meddling was meant to help Mr. Trump get elected.

Without substantiation, Trump tweeted in March 2017 that former president Barack Obama had conducted surveillance the previous October at Trump Tower, the NY skyscraper where Trump ran his campaign and transition and maintains a residence.

House Intelligence ranking member Adam Schiff, D-Calif., warned Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that revealing the source's identity or other information "could compromise the investigation". Mr. Caputo said he was also approached by an informant.

His demand came after reports that the FBI's investigation of alleged links between Trump and the Kremlin relied partly on informants who were connected with the campaign.

But Sanders insisted that Democrats were cut out because they had not requested the same materials that their Republican colleagues had. Comey later testified to Congress that internal reviews found no information to support the president's tweets. Additionally, Flynn and Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos pled guilty to making false statements about their contacts with Russians to investigators.
