Tesla's Musk admits Model 3 braking issue, promises fix

Tesla's Musk admits Model 3 braking issue, promises fix

"Tesla won't stop until Model 3 has better braking than any remotely comparable vehicle", Musk wrote in exchanges with other Twitter users.

Despite the production problems Tesla has admitted to, as well as unaddressed rumored production issues, Tesla is claiming to be nearly ready to start delivering examples of its Model 3 equipped with an all-wheel drive dual-motor option.

While these conclusions by Consumer Reports sound pretty favorable, the Model 3 still fell short of a Recommended rating for a number of reasons.

Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., said it was not unusual for companies to produce higher-priced, more profitable models when they start making a new vehicle. But the big issue was braking performance.

Among the issues Consumer Reports cited in its review: When stopping at a distance of 152 feet while traveling at 60 miles an hour, the Model 3's performance was "far worse than any contemporary auto we've tested" and seven feet longer than that of a full-size Ford F-150 pickup truck. At 46.3 m to stop from 100 km/h, it was just over two metres longer to stop than an F-150 pickup and about 7.5 m longer than the class average. "We've conducted it on more than 500 vehicles, and we are always looking for consistent, repeatable results", Fisher said.

For current Tesla owners, there was another titillating tidbit: You will soon be able to request service from your phone, and Tesla will come to you to take care of the auto. The magazine published a test, which said Tesla Model 3's one stop from 70mph took "an interminable 196ft".

"I've been testing cars for 11 years..."

The CEO replied to a Twitter user asking when the base version is scheduled to arrive.

Calling the review "very strange", Musk also said that the variability in stopping distance was due to an anti-skid braking system (ABS) calibration algorithm. For free. If there is a hardware problem with some cars, that could become an expensive guarantee, but one that's likely to make owners happy.

Additionally, Musk announced orders for all-wheel-drive and performance-variant Model 3 sedans are now open. The specs for the dual-motor version include a 499 km range, the same as the single-motor version. It will cost $5,000 to add the AWD option, and Musk projects range to be 310 miles. Since Tesla pricing normally follows current exchange rates, that's about $6,410. In 60-0mph tests, the Model 3 stopped at 152 feet.
